Nineteen three-year-olds have been included in nominations for Saturday’s 2016 Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens; often used as a final point of call ahead of the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).
Press Statement was undoubtedly the dominant colt of his age group over a mile in 2015 and is poised for a racing return this weekend after trainer Chris Waller included the three-year-old in 2016 Hobartville Stakes nominations.
Mustering two dominant performances for success upon debuting to racing late last autumn, Press Statement more than displayed his quality when delivering a talented field defeat in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Doomben on June 6th.
Resuming in spring for a close second in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m), the Hinchinbrook colt failed to fire in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) but responded in the best way possible when taking out each of the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) and Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
Waller is set to launch a multi-pronged attack on the 2016 Hobartville Stakes after also included Counterattack, Dubaiinstyle, Torgersen and Vanbrugh in nominations.
Counterattack has been a strong and consistent performer for Waller through his short but impressive racing career; winning the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) and Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) as well as finishing third in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) most notably in spring.
Having resumed this time for third in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m), the Redoute’s Choice colt appears primed for success in the 2016 Hobartville Stakes.
Vanbrugh was included in nominations for a competitive return in last weekend’s Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield but has instead been kept for the Hobartville Stakes.
Posting four wins and two minors through nine career starts, Vanbrugh ended a strong spring campaign with a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) on October 10th.
Godolphin are also set to have several representatives in the three-year-old race after John O’Shea included three Hobartville Stakes nominations, headlined by Shards and Victoria Derby runner-up Etymology.
Shards should be perfectly suited to the conditions of the Hobartville Stakes following his first-up fourth in the Eskimo Prince Stakes first-up.
Etymology will undoubtedly need more distance to return to winning form but harbours the class to be right in the finish of the Hobartville Stakes.
The 2016 Hobartville Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
