A strong and consistent performer for the Randwick trainer over spring, John Sargent has revealed he will more than likely accept a position in the final field for Saturday’s talent-rich Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) with Thunder Lady.
Securing one win and a further four minor place finishes over his eight start career so far, Thunder Lady has not been seen at the races since running on for an impressive second in the featured Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on November 6th.
Having reportedly worked well in the lead-up to her autumn return, Sargent told AAP her performance in a Sydney barrier trial on Tuesday morning will dictate whether or not Thunder Lady will accept into the 2015 Hobartville Stakes final field.
“I won’t decide until after she works on Tuesday morning whether she runs in the Hobartville or waits another week for the Surround,” Sargent said.
“I’m happy so far and if I think she is ready she will go to the Hobartville which is going to be a top race.
“She is a big, loping filly and obviously we won’t see the best of her until she gets to the longer distances but she has to start somewhere.”
Unable to beat a single runner home in her racing debut on April 5th, Thunder Lady returned to the paddock following a plausible performance for fourth in the Cambridge Equine Hospital Handicap (1200m) at Te Rapa in New Zealand on April 26th.
Placing third in a 1300m Goulbourn Maiden race first-up on September 4th, the daughter of Mastercraftsman ran second in the Go The Panthers Maiden (1500m) at Hawkesbury before placing fifth in her metro debut over a mile at Randwick on October 4th.
Having placed third in the McDonalds Newcastle Maiden (1850m) and won the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) in her only other starts prior to the Crown Oaks, Thunder Lady will have to find an extra gear if to overcome a field likely to include Shooting To Win, Hallowed Crown, Hampton Court and Scissor Kick in the 2015 Hobartville Stakes.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2015 Hobartville Stakes is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
