Sweynesse more than announced his racing arrival over the 2014 Spring Carnival and is reportedly in exceptional condition ahead of his racing return in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on February 21st.
Finishing outside the places just once over his six start career so far, Sweynesse has not been seen at the races since finishing a credible eighth in the major Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25th; impressively posting the fastest final section of all 14 runners.
Confirming the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on Day 1 of The Championships will figure as his major target this season, trainer John O’Shea told Racing Ahead the Godolphin team are thrilled with the three-year-old’s condition and are excited for his competitive return in two weeks.
“He’s going to go to the races at Canterbury on Wednesday and have a gallop between races with his stable mate,” O’Shea said.
“He’ll resume in the Hobartville and just go the traditional path.
“He’s grown quite a bit which is understandable, he was only a November foal and he’s got to sort of the 535kgs mark and looks relatively fit doing so, which is about 15-20kgs heavier than what he was in the spring.
“He has to improve a little but it would appear he that he can improve physically.”
Winning a minor over 1400m in May last year before immediately returning to the paddock, Sweynesse won the TAB Early Quaddie 3.y.o (1400m) first-up on August 30th before making a successful transition to black type racing in taking out the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) on September 17th, in what also figured as the re-branded Godolphin’s first Group level victory.
Continuing his impressive run through the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m), the son of Lonhro placed third in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) in what was his only other start prior to the Cox Plate.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2015 Hobartville Stakes is due to be completed a released by midday, February 18th.
