Former jockey Mark Newnham believes that Pierro will be back to his best in time for the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse this Saturday march 2, 2013.
Newnham, who works closely with trainer Gai Waterhouse, is confident that Pierro will be hard to beat in his first race for the autumn racing carnival.
Pierro has won eight of his 10 race starts and has earned more than $3.55 million in prize money during his horse racing career.
His most recent result was a third placing behind Ocean Park and All Too Hard in the $3 million Cox Platelast October.
“He’s bigger and stronger,” Newnham said.
“I think he has taken another step. He’s just a more mature horse.”
Pierro will come up against talented stable mate Proisir in the 2013 Hobartville Stakes, and feels that the former will most likely take out Saturday’s race.
“They’re a bit different physically. Proisir is more a heavily-built colt so it’s only natural he would take a bit longer to come to his peak,” Newnham said.
“I just hope they both finish their campaigns with Group One wins. One has done it and one is promising to do it.”
Proisir has won three of his five race starts and has earned more than $370,000 in prize money.
The Choisir colt placed eighth in the Group 1 Cox Pate last start and will also be having his first-up start in the 2013 Hobartville Stakes.
